    History Regence

The history of Regence begins with its founding on June 2, 1917, in Tacoma, Washington. The company was called Pierce County Industrial Medical and Surgical Service Bureau, but it started with neighbors helping neighbors. Formed by a group of timber workers, pooling a percentage of their wages to cover each other’s medical bills was a spirit of community and mutual support, a model that would continue to guide Regence in the decade following, and beyond.

Faced with a sharp uptick in new customers to enroll for 2014 coverage, Regence is preparing for a busy open enrollment period as the company celebrates its 100th anniversary and has added more than 4,500 employees since last year. Regence has been committed to innovation in healthcare, over the years. For instance, it pioneered perinatal palliative care and telemedicine, all to give patients a more personalized, consumer-centric experience.

As Regence celebrates its 100th year of service, we still find ourselves looking for new ways to improve the way we deliver care to our customers, said President of Health Plan Operations Scott Powers. “This milestone reminds us of our centuries in providing for the Pacific Northwest, and reaffirms our 100-year commitment to neighbors helping neighbors.”

Throughout its 100-year journey, Regence has focused on helping people use and apply their health benefits. The commitment to service excellence and high-quality care has received company recognition from NCQA and among the Blues network. While it may be the focus of Regence, it’s the employees that make the difference at Regence and drive the success and future growth of the company.

Does Regence Cover Rehab for Mental Health Treatment?

Mental treatment, such as therapy, is covered by Regence Blue Cross. So, if you’re on a Regence plan, you can get access to some really basic mental health services, sometimes at lower out-of-pocket costs. Regence covers different forms of therapy, like counseling and psychiatric services, and helps members cope with mental health issues.

For example, Regence has different plans, for people, family, and employees depending on how much you want to spend on mental coverage in the plan. This can be complete coverage for outpatient therapy sessions, and inpatient services, to name a few, other mental health treatments. Check the details of your plan and what is covered, any coinsurance or coins payments, and what network providers are available to you. That way, you won’t end up with any surprises and you’ll secure yourself proper access to the mental health care you require.

Mental Health Programs Covered by Regence Health Insurance

There’s a wide range of mental health disorders that Regence Blue Cross covers and provides points of access to therapy by licensed and credentialed professionals. Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and nurse practitioners are included among these. The therapist has to use an evidence-based therapy mode (it must be scientifically proven to work for your diagnosis):

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). A highly structured approach that has been proven to help people handle anxiety, depression, and other mental health situations by challenging negative thoughts and behaviors.
    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT is used often for people with borderline personality disorder and people who struggle emotionally regulating.
    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It is a therapeutic approach that tries to make people accept uncomfortable emotions with the help of their efforts in committing to behavior change that matches only their values and is used mostly in the solution of anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
    • Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP). ERP is used often to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which involves preventing the compulsive responses that usually occur when you find yourself faced with your fear, and gradually exposing yourself to the things you fear.
    • Internal Family Systems (IFS). An approach to therapy using understanding and accepting different 'parts' of the self for trauma and some personality disorders.
    • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Guided eye movements in EMDR are part of an effective therapy for PTSD.
    • Biofeedback. It is also known as a technique by which sensors are used to measure physiological functions and to develop people’s skills in controlling those functions (such as heart rate or muscle tension) usually for the treatment of anxiety or stress-related disorders.

What Mental Health Disorders Does Regence Cover?

A broad array of mental health programs and services are offered to people with many different kinds of mental health conditions, covered by Regence Blue Cross. You don't have access to these benefits unless you have been diagnosed by a credentialed therapist, which you'll need to start the billing or reimbursement process. Some of the common mental health conditions that Regence Blue Cross plans cover include:
    • Help as we support those whose symptoms of depression we try to help by getting counseling and therapy.
    • For treating many types of anxiety disorders, which include generalized anxiety, panic disorders, and social anxiety.
    • Alcohol and drug abuse. Addiction (such as alcohol and drug abuse) is covered by Regence.
    • Grief and loss. Helping people dealing with grief and loss to deal with difficult emotions.
    • Eating disorders. Coverage for therapy for eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating.
    • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other kinds of treatments for people experiencing OCD.

Regence Blue Cross also covers many other mental health diagnoses beyond those captured in the RCPM, to offer a myriad of support options for their members. You may talk to your therapist about whether or not you want the diagnosis to be kept private between your therapist and Regence Blue Cross, or for you to pay privately and not file a report.

How Much Does Regence Cover For Mental Health Treatment?

Your exact plan will depend on which mental health treatment Regence Blue Cross covers, which may differ depending on the amount. There are different levels of mental health benefits from the Regence plans, although all of them provide coverage for both in-network and out-of-network providers. To not get any unexpected bills, it’s important to be aware of your individual plan’s details when looking for therapy.

Depending on your Regence Blue Cross plan, therapy sessions may be completely covered, meaning you won’t owe anything out of pocket for regular trips to your therapist. However, the price can vary, as other plans can have a copay for every session, from $20 to $50, based on the way your plan was designed. There are also plans with a coinurance rate (around 20 percent of the session cost), so you will have to pay a portion of the total fee.

If you choose to see an out-of-network therapist, you may not get any coverage with your Regence plan and pay the full session fee. As for that, it’s critical to look at exactly what coverage yours has included, whether your therapist is in-network, and what you’ll pay. Checking your benefits will help you decide the best way to go about your mental health care and keep you from being surprised by costs.
