    History Optum

Under UnitedHealth Group, Optum is a health services and innovation company with strategic growth and development through innovation and acquisitions in a rich history. Optum was founded to address the changing requirements of the healthcare industry and has since grown to become a leader in health technology, pharmacy services, and patient-centered care.

Optum was founded on the creation of Ingenix, then OptumInsight, a Health IT division from UnitedHealth Group, and a Specialized Care Services company, now OptumHealth. UnitedHealth Group’s entry into health banking platforms was the launch of Exante Financial Services and Exante Bank.

As with virtually every company, Optum has followed a robust acquisition strategy – growing in reach and capability with acquisitions. For instance, the pending Acquisition of DaVita will enable OptumCare to participate in 35 of the 75 local care delivery markets targeted. For Optum this acquisition adds to the company’s desire to expand its footprint in patient-focused, localized care services.

The success of Optum’s model in driving growth in revenue, and helping make the company one key player in transforming the industry, has been effective. As it remains focused on patient-centered care, through advanced technologies and its expansive network, its path to smarter, healthier communities and a more sustainable healthcare system continues.

How Much Does Optum Cover For Mental Health Treatment?

Not all insurance plans put the same amount towards mental health treatment. The structure of the cost can be very different with hundreds of plans designed for individuals and families:

    • Fixed copayments are usually included in many Optum plans for each therapy session. For example: typical copay amounts - $20 to $100 per session. This fee is paid by you directly to the therapist or provider each time you come and see a session.
    • Some plans pay coinsurance instead of a copay. This means you’ll pay a percentage of the total session cost, such astypical coinsurance rates - about 10%-20% of the session fee. Let’s take the example of a therapy session that costs $150 and your plan has a 10 percent coinsurance, your out-of-pocket expense would be $15.

Your Optum customer service or therapist can give you a clear estimate of out-of-pocket expenses. Financial flexibility of the coverage to help meet the cost of quality mental health care can make quality mental health care more accessible through Optum.
