    History Highmark

The company is called Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in western Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania Blue Shield in the rest of the state. Currently, it caters to 18 million people, provides various insurance solutions, and realizes more than $7.4 billion in annual sales.

The merger led to the formation of a monopoly of insurance service providers with a commanding share in Pennsylvania; however, the antitrust authority questioned the merged firms on competition and quality issues. Highmark diversified its programs offered, covering dental and vision as key areas, and got large-scale arrangements, such as with the U.S. armed forces.

What Mental Health Disorders Does Highmark Cover?

A variety of mental health disorders are covered by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Therapy must come from a credentialed mental health professional who is a psychologist, psychiatrist, licensed professional counselor, social worker, nurse practitioner, or other licensed experts who must qualify for coverage. The therapist must use an evidence-based therapy approach, meaning the therapy has been scientifically researched and proven to be effective:
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT is an extremely effective treatment for depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It is focused on identifying and changing emotional distress by changing negative thought patterns or behavior.
    • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. DBT is especially useful for people who have extremely emotional responses and is often used to treat borderline personality disorder, self-harm behavior, and very severe mood swings. Combining cognitive behavior and mindfulness practices, this course assists people in dealing with their emotions and also cultivating healthier relationships with one another.
    • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is used to treat trauma and PTSD by helping people process and incorporate unpleasant memories. It works well to address the chronic emotional and psychological effects of traumatic experiences.
    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. ACT is a kind of therapy that encourages us to see our thoughts and feelings, instead of pushing them away. That said, it is especially effective for anxiety, depression, and other chronic pain conditions.
    • Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy. OCD is usually treated with this type of therapy. Exposure to anxiety-provoking situations and helping the person resist these compulsive behaviors constitute it.
    • Internal Family Systems. IFS is an approach to treating the different parts of self which enables the understanding and healing of the same parts. Trauma, eating disorders, and mood disorders are common uses of this.
    • It is the use of feedback from the physiologic system (e.g. heart rate, muscle tension) to provide feedback that individuals can then use to control mental health. For anxiety, stress, and chronic pain, it is usually used.
