What Is a Self-Harm Relapse?

Self-harm relapse is a case when a patient who used to self-harm starts self-harming again after abstaining for a period of 3-4 weeks. However, there are several tactics to prevent the relapse [2]. These are:

  1. Trying distraction techniques such as calling someone, who can support you, taking a shower, drinking a glass of water, or counting to a thousand.
  2. Trying calming techniques: taking a bath, doing a self-massage, doing a meditation, or listening to music.
  3. Practicing self-expression. For example, drawing, painting, making music, or writing a poem.
  4. Changing your environment such as going outside, moving to another place, or leaving home.
